Frequently asked questions

What people ask us most

We have collected the questions we hear most often. Not finding yours? Call or write — we answer in English and we are glad to help.

Before you start

Do I need to speak Czech for the exam?

No. The final examination can be taken without Czech. Tell us at the start that you will be working in English and we will arrange everything accordingly.

Can I do the whole training in English?

Yes. Flying, briefings and the theory are all available in English, and the final examination can be taken without Czech. We teach foreign students regularly, and many of them speak no Czech at all.

Is there an age limit for flying?

You can start training at 15. Solo flight is allowed from 16, so the licence is within reach at sixteen. There is no upper limit — we have taught people well into retirement.

Do I need any aviation knowledge before I start?

No. We start from the very beginning. The mechanics of flight, meteorology, navigation and the regulations are all part of the course. A long-standing interest helps, but it is not required.

Do I need to be especially fit?

No. Our students have ranged from teenagers to pensioners, office workers to tradespeople. You need the willingness to learn and the time to give it.

What is the difference between an aeroplane and a trike licence?

The ultralight licence covers aerodynamically controlled aeroplanes up to 600 kg — an enclosed heated cabin, higher cruise speed and longer range. The trike licence covers powered hang gliders, flown by shifting your weight. A trike gives you an open view and a far more immediate experience; an aeroplane is more comfortable for travelling. The simplest thing is to come and try both.

How do I know whether flying is for me?

Come out for a first visit with no obligation. We will show you the aeroplanes and trikes, talk through the training and go up together.

How the training works

How demanding is the medical?

Not demanding — roughly comparable to a driving licence medical. You will need a class 2, LAPL or sport-pilot medical certificate. We will point you to a doctor who can issue one.

How many flying hours does it take?

The regulations set 20 flying hours for aeroplanes and 15 for trikes. That is an absolute minimum — most students end up flying 25 to 40 hours. Your instructor decides, because part of the training is already solo and both of you need to be confident.

How long does the training take?

Flying once a week, the whole thing can be done in a couple of months. Two or three times a week works better still. The pace is always individual.

Can I pause the training?

Yes. You pay only for the hours you actually fly. Holidays, illness, a busy stretch at work — you pick up where you left off.

What do I need before my first solo?

Third-party liability insurance and a radiotelephony licence. We will advise you on both and help you arrange them.

Prices and payment

Do I have to pay the whole amount up front?

No. You pay as you go, hour by hour, so you keep control of the spending. If you would rather save, we offer prepaid blocks of hours at a lower rate.

Do I pay landing fees?

No. Unlike some schools, we charge no landing fees at our airfields, either during training or when you rent. It makes a real difference to the total.

What is included in the price?

The instructor and fuel, pre-flight preparation, debriefs between and after flights, and our continued support while you work towards the test. The e-learning and help with flight planning come at no extra cost.

Once you have the licence

What does the ultralight licence let me do?

It entitles you to fly aerodynamically controlled two-seat aeroplanes with a maximum take-off weight of 600 kg. In practice you can fly across most of Europe with it.

Can I rent an aircraft from you afterwards?

Yes. You need the matching licence and a type conversion. If you did not train with us we also ask for a check flight with one of our instructors and a contribution to the repair fund.

Can I fly into large controlled airports?

With the controlled VFR endorsement, yes. It is an add-on course for ultralight licence holders covering a complete controlled flight, from planning through to the radio work.

Trial flights and vouchers

How do I book a trial flight?

Order the flight on the trial flights page, then pick a date in the booking calendar. We confirm the booking by email, usually within two or three working days.

Where does the flight start?

Always at Nymburk airfield, Kovanice 153, 288 02 Kovanice. It is about twenty minutes by car from Prague.

What should I wear?

Comfortable casual clothes. It tends to be warm in the aeroplane in summer, so dress in layers, and flat shoes are better than heels. For a trike we lend you a flying suit — dress underneath as you would for a motorbike.

Are there any hidden charges?

No. Once the voucher is paid for there is nothing more to pay on the day.

Do you fly in winter?

Yes, we fly all year round. The aeroplanes are heated, and for a trike we lend you a winter suit.

How long is a gift voucher valid?

Vouchers bought directly from us are valid for one year. For vouchers bought through discount sites or other resellers the validity is set by that seller — check the date printed on it. Book your date at least 14 days ahead; changes are possible up to 7 days before the flight.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Flying depends on the weather. If conditions are unsuitable we offer you another date — you do not lose the voucher.

Did not find your answer?

Write or call — we are happy to talk through anything about the training, with no obligation.
